Refined New Peugeot 308 Aims for Segment Leadership

With a strong focus on design, driving experience, efficiency and quality, the refined new Peugeot 308 is the new class-leader across a number of criteria; offering the biggest boot in the segment (470 litres) and excellent passenger room, it has the most compact exterior dimensions in its class; lighter than its competitors and fitted with the very latest Peugeot petrol and diesel powertrains, it will also set new performance records in its class. The new and ultra-modern Peugeot 308 will be launched across Europe from mid-September and will reach showrooms in Ireland this December, ahead of January 2014 sales.

The sleek new Peugeot 308 benefits from an excellent aerodynamic design and balanced proportions. With a length of 4.25m, height of 1.46m and a width of 1.8m, new Peugeot 308 is extremely agile and manoeuvrable. The front and rear overhangs have been reduced which makes it possible to place the wheels nearer the four corners. The result is a compact exterior design that houses a particularly spacious interior that offers up to 1412mm elbow room and a vast cooled glove box of 12 litres. The low loading sill and extensive opening (1068mm wide) make loading easier into the 470-litre volume boot, which increases to 1309 litres when the rear seats are folded.

At the front, a large centrally placed grille surrounded with chrome gives an impression of upmarket elegance. A world-first, full LED headlamps (level 3 models), create a strong signature, whilst the lion-claw rear lamps are outlined by LEDs on all versions of 308, a first in the segment.

Inside the new 308, the innovative i-Cockpit interior is simple and intuitive to use, to invite an unprecedented and unique driving experience. The small, compact steering wheel makes manoeuvring much easier and increases driver control and agility. A head-up instrument panel ensures drivers access information without taking eyes off the road. The large 9.7” touch screen bring together centrally all the controls for air conditioning, driving aids, multimedia, navigation, telephone, Peugeot Connect Apps and vehicle settings: seven buttons over two pages on the touchscreen provide direct access to functions in an easy, concise manner, to leave an uncluttered, minimalist dashboard.

Peugeot Connect Apps offers occupants access to practical information in real time to make everyday driving easier: parking information, fuel prices and service station locators, traffic and weather, tourist information, etc. With the new 308, a new application will join Peugeot Connect Apps. Coyote, which bring together more than 2 million users in Europe and adopts the country legislation, provides a real time warning of a hazardous or risk area, or any other event reported by the community. A wi-fi on board unit will share a wireless internet connection in the vehicle for up to 4 people.

For even more comfort and safety, the new Peugeot 308 may be equipped as an option with a Driver Assistance Pack, incorporating three systems which use radar located at the front of the vehicle: dynamic cruise control, emergency collision alert system and emergency collision braking system. When a vehicle is detected by the radar the system works to firstly maintain a constant distance, warn the driver that the vehicle in front is too close and to automatically apply the brakes to prevent impact. Blind spot monitoring is also available on level three models where an LED integrated in the side mirrors warns a driver of the presence of a car or motorcyclist in the blind spot. A reversing camera and park assist system will also be offered.

The driving experience in the new Peugeot 308 has been further enhanced thanks to chassis development. The repositioning of components and reduced height make it possible to lower the centre of gravity by 20mm and body stability is therefore improved. Improvements to the suspension and special positioning of the wheels makes it possible to improve the turning circle radius by 30cm for benchmark manoeuvrability. Indeed, the innovative design, reduced weight, reduced overhangs, lowered centre of gravity, compact steering wheel, high performance tyres and brakes, combined with Peugeot’s expertise in suspension and ride, give new Peugeot 308 benchmark handling.     

The efficiency of the new Peugeot 308 is in part due to weight reduction compared to the predecessor 308. A total reduction of 70kg was found through using new materials, by optimising the design and by means of an innovative assembly process using Peugeot’s new Efficient Modular Platform 2: of the 116 patents filed by Peugeot, many address design, suspension and wheels. A further 70kg weight reduction has been achieved by optimising the weight of each component, whilst leaving levels of performance intact. For example, the front wings and bonnet are constructed in aluminium, usually preserved for premium vehicles. A world-first, the tailgate is formed using Thermoplastic, a composite material that is both light and rigid.

A range of new Peugeot petrol and BlueHDi diesel engines has been introduced for 308 with CO2 emissions as low as 82g/km matched to consumption of just 3.1l/100km or 91.1mpg, to become class leader in the segment. The engines include the following line-up:

  • 1.2 litre petrol VTi 82bhp 114g/km CO2 5-speed manual
  • 1.6 litre petrol THP 125bhp 129g/km CO2 6-speed manual, ultra low rolling resistance tyres
  • 1.6 litre petrol THP 155bhp 129g/km CO2 6-speed manual, ultra low rolling resistance tyres
  • 1.6 litre HDi diesel 92bhp 93g/km CO2 5-speed manual, ultra low rolling resistance tyres
  • 1.6 litre HDi diesel 115bhp 95g/km CO2 6-speed manual, ultra low rolling resistance tyres

From spring 2014, new Euro 6 engines will be offered on new Peugeot 308 to include derivatives of the 1.2 petrol powertrains:

  • 1.2 litre petrol eTHP 110bhp 5-speed manual EURO 6
  • 1.2 litre petrol eTHP 130bhp 6-speed manual EURO 6
  • 1.2 litre petrol eTHP 130bhp 6-speed automatic EURO 6

Peugeot’s BlueHDi engine range, with a record offering in the segment, will be rolled out for new 308:

  • 1.6 litre BlueHDi diesel 120bhp 82g/km CO2 6-speed manual EURO 6 – segment leader
  • 2.0 litre BlueHDi diesel 150bhp 6-speed manual EURO 6
  • 2.0 litre BlueHDi diesel 150bhp 6-speed automatic EURO 6

The new generation 6-speed automatic gearboxes offered guarantee a high level of driving pleasure with rapid gear changes and improved economy as a result: the difference in terms of emissions of CO2, compared to a manual gearbox is now less than 10g/km.

The new 308 is the embodiment of Peugeot’s move upmarket, a process started some years ago with 508, 208 and new 2008. The choice of specific quality materials, assembly of components, soundproofing, durability, the sculpted exterior and simple, clean interior all work together to place new 308 among the very best in the segment. The new Peugeot 308 successfully passed numerous quality tests: 2.5 million kilometres driven before launch, 2,500 hours of tests the 4-ram vibration and climate test beds, 2,500 cycles of air conditioning tested, 4.3 million presses on the touch screen without failure.

The new Peugeot 308 will have its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 10th September 2013 and will go on sale in France on 12th September. Destined also for an international market, the new 308 will be manufactured first at Sochaux, France and then in China, for Asian markets2474. The French sites in Tremery and Douvrin will supply all the diesel and petrol powertrains.

Prices and specifications for the Irish market will be announced closer to its arrival in December.
