Tipperary Man to Compete in National Irish Tarmac Championships in Peugeot 208 R2

Andrew Slattery, 26, from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, has purchased a new Peugeot 208 R2 from Peugeot Sport, France with a view to entering the National Irish Tarmac Championships next year.

Andrew competed in his 205 GTi in the Irish 205 Challenge for 2 seasons, 2008 – 2009, winning the Novice Award in 2008 and gaining some vital tips and advice under the experienced eye of Rory Galligan. In 2009 he narrowly missed out on the top spot due to a crash on the 2nd last round. He however set the highest number of fastest stage times, winning the fastest driver award and came second in the overall standings. He bought a group N Subaru for the 2011 tarmac season and after a promising start of 11th overall in the Circuit of Kerry, leading Group N in the West Coast Championship, a crash on the Circuit of Munster finished his season.

An excited Andrew Slattery said, “The car is ordered and I can’t wait to see it in the New Year. I’ve been back and forth to the UK and France to see the car and am feeling very confident. The car is very good. Our goal for 2013 is to set up the new car to our liking on Irish tar for the first 3 - 4 events. We’re aiming to finish the year in the top 3 of the Irish R2 class in the National Tarmac Championship. We hope to compete in the Circuit of Ireland, to get valuable mileage under our belt.”

To comply with regulations, Peugeot Sport has fitted a brand new 1.6 litre 185bhp engine to the 208 R2. This new engine is based on the 1.6 VTi power unit that is available on some versions of the new Peugeot 208 and will come with variable valve timing (VVT) for the intake and exhaust.

Engineers worked to reduce the weight of the body shell to bring down the centre of gravity, optimise where the weight is located and reduce the inertia of the car with short overhangs. A long wheelbase ensures excellent stability and provides the 208 R2 with outstanding road holding. The strengthened shell incorporates a multi-point, welded roll cage and marks a real step forward in terms of safety compared to rival roll cages thanks to a new manufacturing process.

The 208 R2 features a newly developed gearbox. A five-speed, manual, sequential gearbox with the lever mounted on the steering column is fitted. The lever is much shorter and positioned higher to allow a more direct and precise shift. Hydraulic steering allows greater precision and greater feedback of information particularly on loose surfaces whilst the wishbone suspension improves traction and performance.

The newly developed engine, carefully designed aerodynamics, low bodyshell weight and new gearbox all work together to result in significant fuel consumption savings, to keep the costs of competing to a minimum. With the 208 R2, Peugeot Sport has created an ideal and affordable rally car for someone who wants their first taste of rallying or to simply enjoy their passion. The gravel and asphalt versions of the R2 are available in kit form or in fully built form from Peugeot Sport.
